It's the memorial to Dr. Sun Yat Sen, who is known as the founding father of Taiwan; he was the first president of Taiwan when it was founded in 1911. (Taiwan is also known as the Republic of China, different from China which is the People's Republic of China. The founders of Taiwan were the opponents in a war for control of mainland China and they came here to regroup and ready themselves to try to regain power. The political party from that time, the KMT, is still in existence; the other main political party is the Independents, who want to completely and officially separate from China.)
An interesting thing about the founding date of 1911...that's the start of Taiwan's calendar system, so this year is 98. The date is used on most things, including dates in office systems (at the Chinese doctor, they had to calculate my date of birth from what I wrote down) and even on egg packages in the store in the expiration label.
The memorial is only a 10 minute walk from the yoga studio, so now I go there often to enjoy the beautiful grounds. Also, every hour, they have a changing of the guards ceremony:
